Whey Protien side Effects

Posted by SK March 26, 2010 10 comments

There has not been a single scientific study using healthy adults with normal kidney function that has shown any kidney dysfunction whatsoever from a high protein, or whey protein diet.

There are absolutely no documented or recorded whey protein side effects. Whey is derived from milk during cheese manufacturing so it's totally safe to consume. It is a natural food substance and is as safe to take as milk itself!

There are some minor whey protein side effects you should be aware of however. Whey protein may cause allergic reactions in people who suffer from lactose intolerance or who are generally allergic to dairy products. Although whey protein has very little lactose, and in the case of whey protein isolates and hydrolyzed whey protein which has virtually no lactose, you may still experience the same reactions you'd have drinking milk or consuming any other dairy product. The best thing you can do if you are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy products is to consult your doctor before incorporating whey protein in your diet.

As for any major whey protein side effects, there is debate over the excessive intake of protein over the long-term (whey protein or any protein). Some experts believe that long-term, excessive protein intake (again whey protein or any protein) may be associated with deteriorating kidney function. Interestingly enough, there isn't any research that supports the idea of kidney damage due to excessive protein intake, but many experts still insist that there is a risk. There are also some experts that believe excessive protein intake can damage the liver and possibly bring about osteoporosis over the long-term.

There is an excellent article by Will Brink, a well-known author and nutrition expert, called, "Nutritional Myths that Just Won't Die: Protein!" that I encourage you to read. In my opinion, he sets the record straight on whey protein side effects and excessive protein intake. If you like this article and what he has to say, you might want to check out his book, Bodybuilding Revealed - Build Muscle Mass Without The Fat. It's loaded with information on general nutrition and bodybuilding supplements. It's one of the best sources of objective nutritional information I've been able to find.

Here is my take on this subject; like everything in life, too much of a good thing is just that - too much. Moderation is the key with anything you consume whether it's food, alcohol or supplement. Read my page on proteins to get some guidelines on what protein intakes might work best for you.

If you're wondering what the best protein on the market is, I always recommend Optimum Nutrition 100% Classic Whey, 5 Lbs., Chocolate from Bodybuilding.com. It's very affordable, yet not "cheap" and still a high quality, great tasting protein. I've tried a lot of them and the cheaper brands are made of low quality proteins and in general just do not taste very good at all. Your results may vary, but the Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey always gets great reviews by anyone that takes it.

NASA released new photos today of everyone's favorite former planet: Pluto.

The space agency says the photos, which were taken in the early 2000s by the Hubble Space Telescope, are the "most detailed and dramatic images ever taken of the distant dwarf planet."

"The Hubble pictures confirm Pluto is a dynamic world that undergoes dramatic atmospheric changes not simply a ball of ice and rock," NASA says in a news release.

But the new glamour shots won't be enough to get Pluto registered again as a planet.

The pictures come just as Pluto is heading into a new phase of its 248-year orbit around the sun, NASA says:

Pluto is unlike Earth, where the planet's tilt alone drives seasons. Pluto's seasons are asymmetric because of its elliptical orbit. Spring transitions to polar summer quickly in the northern hemisphere, because Pluto is moving faster along its orbit when it is closer to the Sun.

Space.com says new colors and features of Pluto came to light in the photos:

The surface appears reddish, yellowish, grayish in places, with a mysterious bright spot that is particularly puzzling to scientists.

Some of the colors revealed in the new pictures of Pluto are thought to result from ultraviolet radiation from the sun interacting with methane in the tenuous atmosphere of the dwarf planet. The bright spot apparent near the equator has been found in other observations to be unusually rich in carbon monoxide frost.

Pluto lost its status as our solar system's ninth planet in 2006 when an international group of scientists decided that it was too small and too distant to be considered a member of the Earth's solar-system family.

More from the National Academies:

Pluto is considerably smaller and more distant than the other planets in our solar system. Two-thirds the size of Earth's moon, Pluto's classification as a planet came under scrutiny when many objects of similar size and distance were discovered in the Kuiper Belt in the 1990s.

Not just swine flu - new cold virus may lurk, too

– A man receives a dose of H1N1 flu vaccine as a woman waits for her turn at a hospital in Athens November … By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor Maggie Fox, Health And Science Editor – 42 mins ago
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Runny nose, fever, cough, even pneumonia -- the symptoms sound like swine flu but children hospitalized at one U.S. hospital in fact had a rhinovirus, better known as a common cold virus, doctors said on Tuesday.

Hundreds of children treated at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia had a rhinovirus, and federal health investigators are trying to find out if it was a new strain, and if this is going on elsewhere in the country.

"What began to happen in early September is we started seeing more children coming to our emergency room with significant respiratory illness," said Dr. Susan Coffin, medical director of infection control and prevention at the hospital.

Doctors and parents assumed it was the new pandemic H1N1 swine flu, which would be expected to re-emerge as schools began in September. But it was not, Coffin said in a telephone interview.

The hospital, unlike most hospitals in the United States, runs a test that can diagnose 10 different respiratory viruses, including influenza but also rhinoviruses, parainfluenza viruses and other germs that make kids sick.

"The data showed us it wasn't H1N1 but instead was this rhinovirus infection," Coffin said.

Usually rhinoviruses cause an annoying but benign illness that looks a lot like flu, but with more runny nose and usually less of a fever. This one was causing severe symptoms and even pneumonia.

"Some of these kids had really bad wheezing," Coffin said -- so bad they had to be hospitalized and treated with a nebulizer, which delivers drugs into the lungs to help keep oxygen in the blood.

"We don't terribly often have large numbers of children test positive for it," Coffin said.

CDC INVESTIGATING

But she estimated that 500 were hospitalized in September and October, with no deaths that she knows of. Starting in mid-October, H1N1 swine flu started to show up, too.

The U.S. Centers For Disease Control and Prevention is investigating, said CDC spokesman Dave Daigle.

"While rhinovirus outbreaks are common in the fall, the outbreak that occurred this year was unusually large and resulted in a lot of hospital admissions, including many children that required intensive care," Daigle said.

"We're still testing the strains from the outbreak, but from what we've seen so far, it doesn't appear that there's a single predominant strain."

The CDC says while swine flu is above epidemic levels, only 30 percent of cases of so-called influenza-like illness that are tested actually turn out to be H1N1.

Coffin and CDC officials say it is important for people not to assume if they or their children have flu-like symptoms that it was swine flu and that they do not need to be vaccinated.

H1N1 has infected an estimated 22 million people and killed 3,900 in the United States alone. It continues to spread globally and governments are just at the beginning of efforts to vaccinate people against the virus.

There is no vaccine for rhinovirus and no good treatment. For severely ill patients hospitals can try to keep blood oxygen levels up and keep the patients hydrated, often with intravenous lines if they are coughing or wheezing too hard to eat or drink.

Healthy Ways to Enjoy alcoholic Drinks

Posted by SK September 12, 2009 0 comments

Chances are, you'll be raising your glass once or twice this holiday season. While some wine or the occasional cocktail may help improve levels of HDL (the good cholesterol), the recommended limit is generally one drink a day (5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1.5 ounces of liquor) for women, two for men. Two-thirds of women and half of men say they typically exceed that amount. And that, says a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is associated with a 70 percent increased risk of high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and abdominal fat (the kind most dangerous for your heart).

Says lead author Amy Z. Fan, MD, "The best advice is to stay within the guidelines."

People tend to pour up to 30 percent more into short, wide glasses than into tall, slender ones.

Some tips to help you moderate your intake:

Pay attention to the pour.
Pull out the highball glass or wineglass you use most often, and measure how much it holds. Cornell University researchers discovered that people poured up to 30 percent more into short, wide glasses than into tall, slender ones.

Beware of binges.
If you don't drink during the week, it's not okay to make up for that with five or more drinks on Saturday night. Drinking jags, even infrequent ones, especially increase the risk of high blood pressure and elevated triglycerides.

Say no to salty snacks.

Parties mean big bowls of chips, pretzels, and nuts, all of which make you thirsty, so you feel like drinking more. But drinking on an empty stomach isn't smart either. Have a real meal of healthy food before you take your first sip.

Fat Burning Foods

Posted by SK September 7, 2009 1 comments

Fat Burning Foods:

What is a Diuretic? A diuretic is a medication or chemical that promotes the elimination of fluid in the body. This can lead to an accelerated metabolism that seems to flush out the fatty deposits that may lodge themselves on cells. Diuretics break down fatty deposits into small chunks and makes it easier for your body to flush these nasty little things out of your body.

Asparagus Beets Brussel Sprouts Cabbage Carrots
Celery Cucumber Garlic Horseradish Lettuce
Onions Radishes Tomatoes Apple Cider Vinegar

Asparagus

Asparagus contains the chemical asparagine. This is an alkaloid that stimulates the kidneys and improve the circulatory process. These alkaloids directly effect the cells and break down fat. It also contains a chemical that helps to remove waste from the body by breaking up the oxalic acid, this acid tends to glue fat to cells, so by breaking the acid up, it helps to reduce fat levels.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beets

Beets are a strong diuretic that focuses on the liver and kidneys. Beets flush out floating body fats. They have a special iron the cleanses the corpuscles, corpuscles are blood cells that can contain fat deposits.

It also contains a chlorine that also helps to flush out fatty deposits. This chlorine stimulates the lymph which will clear out the fat deposits.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brussel Spouts

This vegetable stimulates the glands, the pancreas especially, which releases hormones the has a cleansing effect on the cells. There are also minerals the stimulate the kidneys. Waste is released quicker and it helps to clean out the cells.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cabbage

This cleanses your body of waste matter because it contains sulphur and iodine, which helps to cleanse the mucous membrane of the stomach and intestines. Cabbage is a great food if you should have a pot belly or a middle age spread. The diuretic cabbage will help to break up the fat in this area.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carrots

Carrots contains carotene, a form of Vitamin A, this carotene will start a fat flushing reaction in your system. This reaction will literally wash out fat and waste quickly. The carotene will be transformed into vitamin A in the intestines and this process will create a speed up in your metabolism and cause a reaction in your cells to remove fat deposits.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Celery

Raw celery has a high concentration of Calcium in a ready to use form, so when you eat it, the calcium is sent directly to work. This pure form of calcium will ignite your endocrine system. The hormones in your body will break up the accumulated fat build up. Celery also has a high level of magnesium and iron which will clean out your system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cucumber

Cucumber contains a high sulphur and silcon content. These minerals work to stimulate the kidneys to wash out uric acid, which is a waste product. With this uric acid being washed out, it stimulates the removal of fat, and loosens the fat from the cells.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Garlic

If you read about the fat burning foods section you would have seen Garlic on that list, well, it is also a natural diuretic. Garlic has mustard oils and these oils create a cleansing action in the body. They promote a vigorous action of peristalsis, which is muscular contraction, and this will loosen fat and help wash out fats. They can also breakdown clumps of fat. So eat garlic and thin down.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Horseradish

We've all seen horseradish, few venture to use it, but it has an amazing effect of dissolving fat in cells (no side effects) and also as a cleansing effect on the body.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lettuce

Lettuce contains iron and magnesium. These minerals will enter your spleen, your spleen helps your immunity and protects the body from illness. The spleen will use these minerals make them stronger, and send them to the cells and tissues.

It will also help the liver, increase your metabolism, and wash out fatty cells. The darker lettuces have more of the minerals. So add Lettuce to your diet NOW!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Onions

Onions, similar to garlic, have minerals and oils that will help to breakdown fat deposits and speed up your metabolism. Have raw onions every day, it has more power than garlic and with the milder smell, it will make an excellent addition to your diet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Radishes

Radishes scrub the mucous membrane of the body because it contains high levels of Iron and Magnesium. These minerals actually help to dissolve fat in the cells.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tomatoes

Tomatoes have high Vitamin C and Citricmalic-oxalic acids. The acid will accelerate the metabolic process. It also helps the kidneys to release more water and helps to wash away fat.

The natural acids with the enzyme activated minerals prompt the kidneys to filter out large quantities of fatty deposits and then you eliminate them from your system. So add tomatoes to your daily diet and your metabolism will thank you for it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apple Cider Vinegar

Use this diuretic in small quantities. You can add it to your salad as a dressing. What makes this such a powerful diuretic is this: It is made from apples and the malic acid in apples will create a fat burning process. Another factor with this vinegar is the fermentation process causes the vinegar to have constructive acids that join with alkaline elements and minerals in the body. This produces a cell scrubbing effect.

It also contains high levels of potassium, which has an antisceptic quality to that helps to eliminate fat deposits.

COOKING CHEMISTRY

Posted by SK August 24, 2009 0 comments

A biochemist and cook explains that cooking is all about chemistry and knowing some facts can help chefs understand why recipes go wrong. Because cooking is essentially a series of chemical reactions, it is helpful to know some basics. For example, plunging asparagus into boiling water causes the cells to pop and result in a brighter green. Longer cooking, however, causes the plant's cell walls to shrink and releases an acid. This turns the asparagus an unappetizing shade of grey.

You love to cook, but have you whipped up some disasters? Even the best recipes can sometimes go terribly wrong. A nationally recognized scientist and chef says knowing a little chemistry could help.

Long before she was a cook, Shirley Corriher was a biochemist. She says science is the key to understanding what goes right and wrong in the kitchen.

"Cooking is chemistry," said Corriher. "It's essentially chemical reactions."

This kind of chemistry happens when you put chopped red cabbage into a hot pan. Heat breaks down the red anthocyanine pigment, changing it from an acid to alkaline and causing the color change. Add some vinegar to increase the acidity, and the cabbage is red again. Baking soda will change it back to blue.

Cooking vegetables like asparagus causes a different kind of reaction when tiny air cells on the surface hit boiling water.

"If we plunge them into boiling water, we pop these cells, and they suddenly become much brighter green," Corriher said.

Longer cooking is not so good. It causes the plant's cell walls to shrink and release acid.

"So as it starts gushing out of the cells, and with acid in the water, it turns cooked green vegetables into [a] yucky army drab," Corriher said.

And that pretty fruit bowl on your counter? "Literally, overnight you can go from [a] nice green banana to an overripe banana," Corriher said.

The culprit here is ethylene gas. Given off by apples and even the bananas themselves, it can ruin your perfect fruit bowl -- but put an apple in a paper bag with an unripe avocado, and ethylene gas will work for you overnight.

"We use this as a quick way to ripen," Corriher said. Corriher says understanding a little chemistry can help any cook.

"You may still mess up, but you know why," she said. When it works, this kind of chemistry can be downright delicious.

WHAT ARE ACIDS AND BASES? An acid is defined as a solution with more positive hydrogen ions than negative hydroxyl ions, which are made of one atom of oxygen and one of hydrogen. Acidity and basicity are measured on a scale called the pH scale. The value of freshly distilled water is seven, which indicates a neutral solution. A value of less than seven indicates an acid, and a value of more than seven indicates a base. Common acids include lemon juice and coffee, while common bases include ammonia and bleach.

WHY DOES FOOD SPOIL? Processing and improper storage practices can expose food items to heat or oxygen, which causes deterioration. In ancient times, salt was used to cure meats and fish to preserve them longer, while sugar was added to fruits to prevent spoilage. Certain herbs, spices and vinegar can also be used as preservatives, along with anti-oxidants, most notably Vitamins C and E. In processed foods, certain FDA-approved chemical additives also help extend shelf life.

This report has been produced thanks to a generous grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, Inc.

Whether it's playing football, swimming or jogging, athletes need to eat a nutritious, balanceddiet to fuel their body. Good nutrition, like any sporting event, has basic ground rules.

Following these rules and getting plenty of practice will help athletes feel great and score those

winning points!
What diet is best for athletes?

All athletes need a diet that provides enough energy in the form of carbohydrates and fats aswell as essential protein, vitamins and minerals. This means a diet containing 55-60 percent ofcalories from carbohydrates (10 to 15 percent from sugars and the rest from starches), no morethan 30 percent of calories from fat and the remaining (about 10-15 percent) from protein. That translates into eating a variety of foods every day - grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, leanmeats, and low fat dairy products. The base of the diet should come from carbohydrates in the form of starches and sugars. Fluids, especially water, are also important to the winning
combination. Dehydration can stop even the finest athlete from playing his or her best game.

Are carbohydrates important for athletes?

When starches or sugars are eaten, the body changes them all to glucose, the only form ofcarbohydrate used directly by muscles for energy. Whether carbohydrates are in the form ofstarches (in vegetables and grains), sucrose (table sugar), fructose (found in fruits and juices) orlactose (milk sugar), carbohydrates are digested and ultimately changed to glucose. The body uses this glucose in the blood for energy. Most glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles. During exercise glycogen is broken down in the muscles and provides energy.Usually there is enough glycogen in muscles to provide fuel for 90-120 minutes of exercise. Most exercise and sport games do not use up glycogen stores so eating carbohydrates during the activity usually isn't needed. But for some athletes, eating or drinking carbohydrates during exercise helps maintain their blood glucose and energy levels.
Most athletes need not be concerned with "carbohydrate loading," the special technique ofeating a lot of carbohydrates for several days before an endurance event. Instead, focus on getting enough carbohydrates everyday. The best way to ensure plenty of energy for exercise is to eat a nutritious, balanced diet that is high in carbohydrates and low in fat with lots of different foods.

Do athletes need extra protein or protein supplements to build
muscles?

No. Muscles develop from training and exercise. A certain amount of protein is needed to helpbuild the muscles but a nutritious, balanced diet that includes two or three servings from the meat/bean/egg group (6-7 ounces total) and two to three servings of dairy daily will supply all of the protein that the muscles need.
Extra servings of protein in foods or protein supplements do not assist in muscle development.Unlike carbohydrates, protein cannot be stored in the body and any excess will be burned for energy or stored as body fat.

What should an athlete eat before, during and after exercise?

The most important thing is to concentrate on eating a nutritious, balanced diet every day. Thisprovides plenty of energy to grow and exercise. Here are a few tips about eating before, duringand after exercise. Before Have some high carbohydrate foods like bananas, bagels or fruit juices. These foods are broken down quickly and provide glucose to the muscles.

The timing of this meal depends on athletes' preference for eating before exercise, but researchers have found that eating something from 1 to 4 hours before exercise helps keepplenty of blood glucose available for working muscles.

It is also critical to drink plenty of cool water before exercise to keep muscles hydrated.
During Perspiration and exertion deplete the body of fluids necessary for an optimal performance and lead to dehydration. It is important to drink plenty of cool water, at least a half a cup of water every 20 minutes of exercise. Adding a teaspoon of sugar, a little fruit juice or a small amount of powdered drink mix flavors plain water and may encourage fluid intake.
· Usually there is no need to worry about replacing carbohydrates unless the exercise lasts over 90 minutes and is hard and continuous. When this happens, drinking a sports drink or other beverage with some sugar in it will fuel and water to the muscles being exercised.

Make a homemade sports drink by mixing no more than 4 teaspoon of sugar, 1/4 teaspoon of salt and some flavoring (like a teaspoon of lemon juice) in 8 ounces of water. After If the exercise was strenuous and lasted a long time, glycogen stores may need refueling. Consuming foods and beverages high in carbohydrates right after exercise will replenish glycogen stores if they are low after exercising.
No matter the intensity of the exercise, it's important to drink plenty of water and eat a nutritious, balanced meal that has lots of carbohydrate rich foods such as grains, pastas, potatoes, vegetables and fruits. A teaspoon of sugar, at only 15 calories* per teaspoon, adds flavor to these foods and may increase taste appeal.
*Note: Like all carbohydrates, sugar has 4 calories per gram, and there are 4 grams toa teaspoon. The FDA's 1993 food labeling regulations require rounding to 15 calories on consumer packages.

A tsunami wave higher than any in recorded history threatens to ravage the US coastline in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands, UK and US scientists reported today.

Locations on both African and European Atlantic coastlines -- including Britain -- are also thought to be at risk.

The new research, a collaboration between Dr. Simon Day of the Benfield Greig Hazard Research Centre at University College London and Dr. Steven Ward of the University of California, reveals the extent and size of the mega-tsunami, the consequence of a giant landslide that may be triggered by a future eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

Previous research by Simon Day and colleagues predicted that a future eruption would be likely to cause a landslide on the western flank of Cumbre Vieja.

A block of rock approximately twice the volume of the Isle of Man would break off, travelling into the sea at a speed of up to 350 kilometers per hour. The disintegration of the rock, this earlier study predicted, would produce a debris avalanche deposit extending 60 kilometers from the island.

The energy released by the collapse would be equal to the electricity consumption of the entire United States in half a year.

The new model -- which provides further insights into the consequences of the collapse -- predicts that the landslide would create an exceptionally large tsunami with the capability to travel great distances and reaching speeds of up to 800 kilometers per hour.

Immediately after Cumbre Vieja's collapse, a dome of water 900 meters high and tens of kilometers wide will form, only to collapse and rebound.

As the landslide continues to move underwater, a series of wave crests and troughs are produced which soon develop into a tsumani "wave train" which fuels the waves' progress. After only 10 minutes, the model predicts, the tsunami will have moved a distance of almost 250 kilometers.

The greatest effects are predicted to occur north, west and south of the Canaries. On the West Saharan shore, waves are expected to reach heights of 100 meters from crest to trough, and on the north coast of Brazil, waves over 40 meters high are anticipated.

Florida and the Caribbean, the final destinations in the North Atlantic to be affected by the tsunami, will have to brace themselves for receiving 50 meter high waves -- higher than Nelson's column in London -- some 8 to 9 hours after the landslide.

Towards Europe, wave heights will be smaller, but substantial tsunami waves will hit the Atlantic coasts of Britain, Spain, Portugal and France.

For tsunamis striking flat-lying coastline regions such as Florida, calculating the inundation distance -- the extent to which water penetrates inland taking the form of fast-moving floods after waves break -- is crucial to assessing potential damage.

Dr. Day and his colleagues estimate inundation distances in the region of several kilometers from the coast. Accurate estimates of the scale of economic loss are yet to be made, but are thought to be in the multi-trillion-dollar range.

Placing the results of the Cumbre Vieja model in its wider context, Dr. Day, a postdoctoral Research Fellow at UCL, said, "Anyone planning a holiday to the Canary Islands and the islanders themselves need not panic. Cumbre Vieja is not erupting, so the short-term and medium-term risks are negligble."

Dr. Day continued:

"The collapse will occur during some future eruption after days or weeks of precursory deformation and earthquakes. An effective earthquake monitoring system could provide advanced warning of a likely collapse and allow early emergency management organizations a valuable window of time in which to plan and respond.

"Eruptions of Cumbre Vieja occur at intervals of decades to a century or so and there may be a number of eruptions before its collapse. Although the year-to-year probability of a collapse is therefore low, the resulting tsunami would be a major disaster with indirect effects around the world.

"Cumbre Vieja needs to be monitored closely for any signs of impending volcanic activity and for the deformation that would precede collapse."

(Reference: "Cumbre Vieja Volcano; Potential Collapse and Tsunami at La Palma, Canary Islands," Ward and Day, will be published in the September 2001 edition of Geophysical Research Letters.

Global Warming Causes Severe Storms

Research Meteorologists See More Severe Storms Ahead: The Culprit -- Global Warming
January 1, 2009 — Research Meteorologists found that the temperature changes brought on by global warming are significant enough to cause an increase in the occurrence of severe storms. Severe storms are those that cause flooding, have damaging winds, hail and could cause tornados. Their study revealed that by the end of this century, the number of days that favor severe storms could more than double certain locations, such as Atlanta and New York. Researchers also found that this increase would occur during typical stormy seasons and not during dry seasons when it may be beneficial.

As new storm forecasts hit home, areas already prone to severe weather need to be on the lookout for more storms. The latest forecast says global warming spells bad news for those areas.

Nancy Werner has seen many storms blow through trees in her yard, but there's one storm she'll never forget.

"We started hearing things land on our house," Werner said.

A stump is all that's left of what she heard falling. "We went upstairs and found limbs through our ceiling," Werner said.

The storm cost Werner $40,000 in repairs, but more severe storms could add up to a lot more. Research meteorologists at Purdue University are using climate models to study future weather conditions that would most likely produce a severe storm. Severe storms are ones that cause flooding and have damaging winds and hail. Some spawn tornadoes.

"What we found is that increases in human-induced greenhouse gases will lead to more frequent severe storms in the United States," Jeff Trapp, Ph.D., a meteorologist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., said.

Based on the models, the researchers believe the number of days that favor the formation of severe storms could more than double in places like Atlanta and New York. These added storms will likely hit areas during already heavy storm seasons and extend wet weather seasons.

"This obviously impacts people in terms of potential hazards to their life and property," Dr. Trapp said.

Researchers hope warning homeowners of increased storm days will help more people prepare earlier. Werner already has a plan in place.

"We've decided we're going to a hotel," she said. Researchers plan to use higher resolution models to find out how often future storms will spawn tornadoes.

HOW STORMS DEVELOP: Storm clouds form as moisture evaporates from the earth into the atmosphere, where the droplets jostle against each other. The air cools off rapidly as it reaches higher altitudes. Sometimes a cold front -- the boundary between where the cold air from one air mass meets the surrounding air -- will force warm, moist air upward into the colder air. This moist air cools off and the water vapor condenses onto tiny particles in the air, called condensation nuclei, collectively forming clouds. The process continues: more and more water vapor turns into liquid and the moist air warms up even more and rises higher and higher. A thunderstorm results.

WHAT CAUSES LIGHTNING? As more and more water droplets collide inside a cloud, their atoms bounce off each other more forcefully. This knocks off electrons. The ousted electrons gather at the lower portion of the cloud, giving it a negative charge, while the upper part of the cloud becomes positively charged. Eventually the growing negative charge becomes so intense that electrons on the Earth's surface are repelled and burrow deeper into the Earth. The Earth's surface becomes positively charged, and hence very attractive to the negative charge accumulating in the bottom of the cloud. All that is needed is a conductive path between cloud and Earth, in the form of ionized air.

ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING: Global warming refers to an average increase in the earth's temperature, which has risen about 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years, and to changes in climate. A warmer earth may lead to changes in rainfall patterns, and a rise in sea level, for example, as the polar glaciers melt. Some of this rise is due to the greenhouse effect: certain gases in the atmosphere trap energy from the sun so that heat can't escape back into space. Without the greenhouse effect, the earth would be too cold for humans to survive, but if it becomes too strong, the earth could become much warmer, causing problems for humans, plants and animals.

The American Meteorological Society and the American Geophysical Union contributed to the information contained in the TV portion of this report.

Swine Flu Precautions and Measures

Posted by SK August 14, 2009 1 comments

SWINE FLU GOOGLE EARTH MAP

Swine Flu (influenza A H1N1 virus has claimed 10 lives in India. Most of deaths are from Pune. Panic has been set in. Around 800+ cases have been recorded through out the India.

What is Swine Flue? Meaning of Swine Flu:

Swine Flu is influenza A H1N1 Virus. It is just like any other common influenza virus but, the big difference is that the current swine influenza A (H1N1) virus has components of pig and bird influenza viruses in it, so that humans don’t have any immunity to it. That is what made it more likely that it would become a pandemic virus (have the ability to cause a global outbreak) because it could easily spread from person-to-person.

The Swine flu has been compared to other similar types of influenza virus in terms of mortality: “in the US it appears that for every 1000 people who get infected, about 40 people need admission to hospital and about one person dies”.

Symptoms of swine flu infections

1) Fever, which is usually high, but unlike seasonal flu, is sometimes absent
Cough
2) Runny nose or stuffy nose
3) Sore throat
4) Body aches
5) Headache
6) Chills
7) Fatigue or tiredness, which can be extreme
8) Diarrhea and vomiting, sometimes, but more commonly seen than with seasonal flu
Signs of a more serious swine flu infection might include pneumonia and respiratory failure.

What is Swine Flu High Risk Group?

There are certain groups of people who are more inclined to get infected to Swine flu. Those groups are called Swine flu high risk groups high risk groups. These people are thought to be at risk for serious, life-threatening infections. The group of people in this group are:

1) Pregnant women
2) People with chronic medical problems, such as chronic lung disease, like asthma, 3) cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and immunosuppression
4) Children and adults with obesity
5) Precautions to prevent swine flu
6) The deadly Swine Flu has finally made press the Panic button in India.. However, 8) Swine Flu is certainly one of those diseased where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Here are five tips for you to keep away from the pandemic

Wash your hands frequently
Use the antibacterial soaps to cleanse your hands. Wash them often, for at least 15 seconds and rinse with running water.
Get enough sleep
Try to get 8 hours of good sleep every night to keep your immune system in top flu-fighting shape.
Drink sufficient water
Drink 8 to10 glasses of water each day to flush toxins from your system and maintain good moisture and mucous production in your sinuses.
Boost your immune system
Keeping your body strong, nourished, and ready to fight infection is important in flu prevention. So stick with whole grains, colorful vegetables, and vitamin-rich fruits.
Keep informed

The government is taking necessary steps to prevent the pandemic and periodically release guidelines to keep the pandemic away. Please make sure to keep up to date on the information and act in a calm manner.

Treatment for Swine Flu infected person

If a person gets infected swine flu there are few antiviral drugs that can decrease the illness. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

The U.S. CDC recommends the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses; however, the majority of people infected with the virus make a full recovery without requiring medical attention or antiviral drugs.

Vaccination for Swine Flu
WHO does not expect the swine flu vaccine to be widely available until the end of 2009, noting that current production “yield” was only about half as much as expected and would cause timeline delays. There is also concern that countries which produce vaccines, 70 percent of which are in Europe, may delay sending swine flu vaccines to other countries as they may come under “tremendous pressure to protect their own citizens first,” note some experts.

Sagudana(Tapioca Pearls)

Posted by SK August 12, 2009 14 comments

Tapioca is a starch that comes from the root of a shrub-like plant called Cassava native to South America. It is most commonly used as a food thickener, and is perhaps best known as an ingredient in tapioca pudding. By itself, tapioca is nearly flavorless and contributes little nutritional value.

Etyomology
The word tapioca comes from the Brazilian Tupi word "tipi'oca." Ty means "juice," pya, means "heart," and oca, means "remove." Removing the heart and juice of the root is how tapioca is extracted.
Production
The root is harvested and the pulp inside is boiled down to release a cyanide based toxin. From here, it can take many different forms.
Types
Tapioca can be found in pearl, flake, powder or stick form. The pearls are found in tapioca pudding, while the flakes and powders dissolve completely when used as thickening agents, so they are not noticeable in the way that the pearl form is. In most forms they are colorless, but some are found dyed different colors to denote the type of Cassava plant or producer the tapioca comes from.
Common Uses
Tapioca is commonly used to thicken puddings, jellies and soups. It is also used as a binder in pharmaceutical tablets and as a thickener in natural paints. When processed as sticks or strips, tapioca can be fried or garnished and eaten, or put through a fermenting process to create a slightly alcoholic beverage. Tapioca takes the form of dessert in many South American and African countries.
Nutrition
It is gluten and protein free and has little nutritional value. Because it is a starch, it is mainly made up of carbohydrates. The nutritional value of tapioca is usually determined by what recipe it is used in. One serving of dry tapioca is 153 calories, 0.4 grams of fat, 10 grams of carbohydrates and 0.2 grams of protein. When it is fried and takes the form of tapioca chips, these figures increase to 490 calories, 24 grams of fat, 66 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of protein.
Considerations
Tapioca can be made to have a high nutritional value depending on what it is added to. Alone, it has little value, but when it is combined with fruit to thicken jelly or to a low calorie soup, the nutritional value increases dramatically. Tapioca is versatile and can be used in many ways.
Warnings
Konzo, or Matakassa, is a paralytic disease that is caused by the toxins that should be released during the process of extracting tapioca. In order to contract this disease, you would have to exclusively eat a large amount of tapioca containing the cyanide based toxin for an extended period of time. Because tapioca is a starch, it can raise blood sugar dramatically in individuals with diabetes.

Tapioca is a root vegetable like potato. In some developing countries such as Brazil, tapioca is provided as a nutritional supplement. It is also considered as an indispensable part of their daily diet. No doubt, tapioca is a brilliant source of starch and thereby supplies energy.

But, health experts often prefer potato to tapioca as apart from starch, potato provides the body with certain other nutrients such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, dietary fiber etc. Unlike tapioca, it also supplies minerals such as iron, potassium, manganese and copper. But, the contribution of calorie is lower in case of tapioca.

Tapioca is low in saturated fat. Harmful presence of sodium is also low. Tapioca is also health-friendly in the sense it does not add bad cholesterol level in the body. People who are keen to increase their body weight are often advised by health experts to include tapioca in their diet.

It is estimated that every hundred grams of this root vegetable provides three hundred and sixty calories of energy. Tapioca is found to be low in nutritional value as the presence of essential vitamins and minerals are minimal. But, tapioca is a stomach-friendly victual as it is easily digestible. Since, tapioca is mainly starch, it is often used to thicken liquids just like authentic arrowroot. It is also found to be great for sauces due to its thickening nature.

Tapioca is also employed extensively for washing and other cloth processing works. The starch content present in tapioca makes it ideal for stiffening the cloth materials. It is often made available in the form of uneven hard white grains that are partially water-soluble. The rhizome from which it comes contains a very dangerous juice. The poisonous content is generally eliminated through natural methods during the washing and drying process. It is then sold in the form of small, medium and large grains.

Egg in Weight Loss

Posted by SK August 11, 2009 0 comments

A new study in the online journal entitled Risk Analysis reports that eating one egg a day accounts for less than 1 percent of the risk of heart disease, the leading killer of American men and women. This, in my opinion, helps deflate the myth that all eggs are always bad for you and can never be included in a heart-healthy meal plan.

The researchers cited lifestyle factors, such as a poor diet, smoking, obesity, and a sedentary lifestyle as chief contributors (30 to 40 percent) of someone's heart disease risk, with men having higher risks than women. Risk factors that could be potentially treated, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, accounted for a whopping 60 to 70 percent of the risk. In this light, a single egg doesn't seem so big a threat.

Eggs have gotten a lot of bad press of late. There seems to be a constant drumbeat, perhaps in the media, about eggs being off-limits if you want to keep your heart healthy. (Just today, I was seeing a patient of mine with young children and, coincidentally, one of his daughters asked me, "Are eggs bad for you?")

Instead of worrying about an egg a day, I think we should turn our attention to the potential risks of stress (especially chronic stress), physical inactivity, and poor overall diet choices (like diets high in junk foods and low in fruits and vegetables).

This research, which was (full disclosure) funded by the Egg Nutrition Center, serves to further substantiate the premise that healthy adults really can eat (whole) eggs without upping their heart disease risk significantly. And what's more, the authors noted that their analysis did not adjust for all the health-promoting benefits of eggs, which might decrease some heart disease risk.

What is it about eggs that could actually help your heart?

Eggs are high in choline, an organic, water-soluble nutrient that's usually grouped in with the B vitamins. They are also high in betaine, a nutrient related to choline. Together these 2 are associated with lower levels of homocysteine (an amino acid that studies has shown to be related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease). It's good to keep homocysteine levels under control because high homocysteine levels usually suggest chronic inflammation, a process that has been linked with heart disease, as well as to Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Treatment of a high homocysteine level usually involves supplementation of the B vitamin folic acid—but don't take more than 1,000 micrograms—1 gram—a day, or it can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Eggs are a great source of high-quality (or high biological value, HBV) protein; in fact, they are considered to be the best overall source of protein.
Eggs provide 13 essential vitamins/minerals, including riboflavin, an important B vitamin needed to help your body get energy from food. Eggs also contain vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin lacking in the diet of many Americans. People who are overweight and/or have diabetes are at a higher risk for vitamin D deficiency.
Eggs also help you feel full, since your body produces a hormone called PYY when you eat high-protein foods. PYY tells your brain you're no longer hungry, so if you're trying to lose some pounds, opting for a high-protein snack like a boiled egg can really help you feel full (and it's only 75 calories). I personally like the organic eggs high in omega 3 fatty acids (the healthy fats), from chickens raised without hormones or chemicals. These eggs are higher in omega 3s because of the healthier feed given to the chickens. The high-omega-3 eggs add another possible benefit to a balanced diet.
However, if, for whatever reason, you want to keep the fat and cholesterol content in your diet low, eat the egg whites and skip the yolk, since all the protein (and virtually none of the fat) is in the whites. There are even cartons of pure egg whites in the grocery store that make it easy. Or you could separate the eggs at home by discarding the yolks, or at least a few of them. This study, however, seems to be suggesting that even the egg yolk isn't anywhere near the health risk people have perceived it to be for all these years. They're also a very affordable source of protein, a big plus in today's economy!

Bottom line: If you really like whole eggs, and your doctor or dietitian thinks they're fine for you, then go ahead and enjoy them, yolks and all!

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR ASTHMA

Natural Remedies For Asthma and Allergies

Natural Holistic Health Solutions for Allergies: Asthma Signs and Symptoms
Allergic reactions occurring in the nose and sinus are called sinus allergies, hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

Allergic reactions in the chest are called asthma.

The terms for allergic reactions in the skin are hives or angioedema.

Hay Fever, Allergies, and Asthma Signs and Symptoms
There are distinctions between conditions of hay fever, asthma, and allergies. When a person is suffering from chronic hay fever, their symptoms begin with a runny nose that itches, and their palate often itches as well. They sneeze, have nasal congestion, and feel pretty miserable. Most symptoms exist in the head region including watery eyes. When visiting a docotr their diagnosis will label these characteristics as allergic rhinitis.

During the spring and fall, as many as twenty-two million Americans suffer from hay fever and many visit their doctor with their itchy red throat and watery eyes seeking a diagnosis and relief.

When it comes to allergies, which is inclusive of hay fever or allergic rhinitis, most symptoms are in the head, sinus and nose but when an allergy moves into the chest, then the associated name is asthma.

Allergic reactions can also take other forms, such as hives, rashes, or angioedema. Depending on where the symptoms appear and how your body reacts determines how you will be diagnosed by your health care provider.

Allergy conditions are not rare to the American public. One in every six have some type of allergy. Some people are more prone to them than others, and many allergies are triggered by pollen from trees, weeds, and grasses during the springtime when winds carry the pollen through the air. Ragweed pollen travels very far, in fact pollen from this plant has been found as far out as four hundred miles at sea!

Children are also quite susceptible, especially when their immune systems are dealing with many types of elements in their environments. Almost forty-percent of the children in the US miss some school each year due to allergies.

Those who suffer from asthma and allergic rhinitis know that symptoms can often be quite serious when the lungs are involved. Also, when complications lead to nasal polyps, or sinus cavity infections. Sometimes the result are secondary infections which can happen in the ears, larynx, and the bronchial tubes.

Because parents watch there kids closely and care for them they can often accurately diagnose their children even before the doctor may do so. But is is always wise to take your child to an allergy or immunology knowledgeable doctor to ensure a proper treatment plan is adopted.

An allergy and asthma health specialist knows how best to analyze the symptoms and determine what types of environmental exposure and elements may be the suspected irritants. Some might be:

Mold and Mildew
Pollens
Dust Mites
Pet Dander from
Household Chemicals
Diet Overload from Sugars, Corn Products, and Wheat
Sometimes the health provider will take blood tests, do x-rays, and even evaluations of the home, or most frequent environments where the patient is exposed to surrounding elements.

Asthma is much more of a complex disease than simple allergies, or hay fever. It can lead to the constriction of human airways by the muscles than line the passages. In severe cases this can lead to life-threatening reactions if the symptoms are not properly addressed through careful diagnosis and proper treatment. So early diagnosis is wise.

So it is always best to be careful not to pollute your home and workplace with known allergens should you suspect they are irritants. Keep house dust at a minimum, don't smoke tobacco indoors, minimize using chemical cleaners, and personal care products that may have questionable ingredients. Watch the effects of pet dander. Change bedding often to lessen dust mite exposure.

Spritzing carpet, bedding and general living quarters with a blend of Teatree Oil and Citronella Oil can keep down dust mites.

Another allergy causing problem is often the skin care products we use, so it is wise to learn about healthy alternatives that are free of chemicals and suspected toxic ingredients known to aggravate allergies. You might want to learn about a Natural Skin Cleansing Product, Free of Chemicals

Spiritually speaking, asthma may be about constriction in freedom. Feeling closed in, not supported, closed off, unable to fully express. These are a few areas a person could explore when seeking the spiritual message within asthma. Children who develop asthma may have parents who smother and over-protect them, not allowing full expression and normal risk-taking during childhood.

As a parent, this balance may be important to explore if your child has developed asthma. Also, when a child is extraordinarily empathic, asthma may develop when one or more of the parents is emotionally repressed during the child's formative years.

Hay Fever, Allergy, and Asthma Information - Natural Products Effective at Stopping Allergies
Prescriptions for over-the-counter allergy remedies are big business. One in five people suffer from some type of allergy symptom and Americans turn to their local drug store and spend as much as five million a year trying to relieve seeking relief. However, there are also other options.

Natural Anti-Histamine
Stock up before symptoms of sneezing and sniffling start. Aller-Sine natural remedy contains "anti-histamines" shown to help stop histamines from stuffing up the nose and causing runny eyes.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR HAIR GROWTH

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR HAIR REGROWTH

Alopecia areata is a hair loss condition that causes the rapid onset of round patches of baldness. The cause of alopecia areata is unknown, although in some cases, alopecia areata has been associated with autoimmune diseases.

People are often in good health. In approximately one-fifth of people who develop alopecia areata, there is a family history.

Natural Remedies for Alopecia Areata

In most people with alopecia areata, hair usually grows back within a year without any treatment. The following are some natural remedies that have been explored for alopecia areata.

1) Essential Oils
A double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined the use of a combination of essential oils or a placebo oil in 86 people with alopecia areata. The combination oil was a mixture of thyme, rosemary, lavender, and cedarwood essential oils in a mixture of carrier oils (jojoba and grapeseed). This oil was massaged into the scalp daily. The control group used only the carrier oils for their massage, also daily.

After 7 months, 19 (44%) of 43 people using the essential oil blend showed an improvement compared with 6 (15%) of 41 people in the control group. Although no side effects were associated with the topical application of essential oils, they may cause allergic reactions in some people.

2) Onion Juice
A study published in the Journal of Dermatology examined the effectiveness of onion juice or placebo in people with alopecia areata. Twenty-three people with alopecia areata applied the onion juice twice daily for two months, and 15 people applied tap water twice daily for two months.

People in the onion group began to experience regrowth of hair after two weeks of treatment. At four weeks, hair regrowth was seen in 17 (73.9%) people and at six weeks, hair regrowth was observed in 20 (86.9%) people. Improvement was significantly higher among males. In the tap water control group, hair regrowth was apparent in only 2 people at 8 weeks.

3) Hypnosis
A preliminary study explored the use of hypnosis on hair growth and well-being in people with alopecia. The study involved 28 people with extensive alopecia areata, alopecia totalis, or alopecia universalis who did not respond to previous conventional treatments.

After treatment with hypnosis, all patients had a significantly lower score for anxiety and depression. Hair regrowth of 75% to 100% was seen in 12 people after 3 to 8 sessions of hypnotherapy. Total regrowth occurred in 9 of these 12 people. In 5 people, a significant relapse occurred.

There were major limitations to this study, however, including the small size of the study, the lack of a placebo group, and the fact that the study was not double-blind. Larger, well-designed studies are needed.

Diabetes Natural Treatment

Natural Cure For Diabetes

A natural cure for diabetes should come from within. Your body has got an intrinsic ability to cure itself. We have to find out only what prevents that ability. And effectively remove that obstacle! Take the following example

No Time Difference

Suppose two persons have identical injuries. One goes for the allopathic treatment. The other one takes only first aid. Even then, you notice that both heal exactly at the same time. Not one sooner than the other!

Healing is inbuilt in every one, and it takes exactly the same time to heal in both cases. In reality, you find that most of the so called treatments, whether allopathic or homeopathic do not produce any healing!

Take The Natural Diabetes Treatment!

Is There A New Method?

If you really want to accelerate healing, and derive a natural cure for diabetes, is there any way? The answer is Yes! It is in Bio Energetics! It declares that one who eliminates his toxins better, heals faster.

For example, assume that there is a new treatment to detoxify all your lymphatic, cellular and vibratory toxins. One of your two friends takes this new treatment as well, and the other takes only his allopathic treatment.

Accelerate Healing!

You will be again astonished to find that the friend who also took the new treatment heals his wounds faster than the other one who had only his regular treatment. Why? Because he has effectively removed his toxins.

How did he achieve this? He did it with the new diagnosis and treatment methods of Bio Energetics. It produces fast Healing leading to a natural cure for diabetes! See useful Reports!

Toxin Blockages

A natural cure for diabetes should ensure speedy evacuation of all your body toxins. When your cells die, these become cellular, vibratory and lymphatic toxin blockages.

If these accumulate, it blocks the energy flow to all your vital organs. All your body functions suffer in these flow lines. Hence, these toxin blockages should be eliminated as soon as these are produced!

Cause Of Disease

When your body is overwhelmed by aggressions, it loses some of its surface defenses. By then, It does not have sufficient dynamism to eliminate your cellular, and other toxins. These begin to accumulate.

A natural cure for diabetes can not be achieved with out their elimination. The accumulated toxins constitute energetic blockages. This affects all functions in your body. It is left wide open for the onset of any disease.

Brain Disconnections

Such blockages prevent vital life energies to reach the destination cells in your body. As a consequence, it affects the energy flow to many of your vital organs. This creates a climate for diseases like your diabetes type 2.

These blockages cause brain disconnections in many of your vital organs. This too can be a cause for your diabetes. Hence, you must aim for total toxin elimination to ensure a natural cure for diabetes.

Four Types Of Toxins

Millions of dead cells come from your cellular regeneration. The unmoved dead cells form cellular matter toxins. These leave a vibratory portion, known as vibratory toxins. These are eliminated directly as vibrations.

Blockages in your lymphatic passages are due to lymphatic toxins. This is left over from what ought to be excreted. To ensure a natural cure for diabetes, you should eliminate all these four types of toxins.

Eliminate Your Toxins!

When your body is congested with toxins, you can not have a natural cure for diabetes. You can also develop any other physical or mental disease. It can be your diabetes or even more chronic diseases.

E Treatment gets rid of these four types of toxins from your body. These are your lymphatic, cellular, vibratory and excretory toxins. You now have a new treatment with a new diagnosis and a natural cure for diabetes.

Clues For Natural Cure

The Secret of Cures lies in uninterrupted flow of life energy. This energy animates your entire body and radiates through all your cells. It animates your intelligence, energy body, physical body, and your energy fields.

It radiates from your chest. It radiates through all the sixty trillion cells in your body. It takes care of their maintenance, regeneration, repair, and toxin elimination. It lays your foundation for a natural cure for diabetes.

Hiccups ....

Posted by SK August 4, 2009 0 comments

Hiccups are involuntary spasms of the diaphragm often accompanied by the familiar "hic" sound. Why do we hiccup? It's a mystery.

Tips for Getting Rid of Hiccups:

Repeated swallowing works for mild cases. Do this by holding your breath and repeatedly swallowing as fast as you can, or by slowly drinking down a beverage with as many swallows as is possible. It's important that you hold your breath for as many gulps as you can. Placing a napkin over a glass of water can help moderate your speed.

Plug your nose and ears then swallow 20 times as fast as possible.

If you notice a friend has a case of hiccups, it is believed that your can 'scare' them away. Sneak up on them and give 'em a good jolt (Be careful though ;)). What? They don't have hiccups? Do it anyway!

Relax, sit still and breathe in deep, slow, rhythmic breaths expanding and contracting your lungs completely.

Distract yourself. Sing a song, go over your 7 times tables (7 x 1 = 7, 7 x 2 = 14, etc) until the hiccups are gone, Exhale completely and hold your breath for as long as possible.
Squawk like a chicken while flapping your arms and bobbing your head as if you were pecking at something. Bugawk!

Laugh. Think of something funny, or do something funny - see above.
Eat a tablespoon of peanut butter.

Stand on your head and drink small gulps of water from a
sports bottle.

Exaggerate your hiccups by inhaling right as you hiccup - this will result in a long and loud "huuuaaagggghhh" that'll either be funny or embarrassing depending on your environment, but after 2-4 of these the hiccups should be gone.

Take a shot of
lemon juice.

Let a teaspoon of sugar dissolve under your tongue.

Think of the ugliest person you've ever seen. Now picture them naked, rolling naked down a hill or riding a bike and slathered in A-1 steak sauce.

Eat some
pickles.

Think the alphabet backwards as fast as you can.

Close your eyes, relax, still your mind and concentrate on nothingness until they're gone.
